$7 million LaFerrari becomes this century's most expensive car sold at auction
Ferrari's liveries and decorations have often shown a patriotic streak, but this year the supercar marque has expressed its love for Italy in a more material way by donating a one-of-a-kind LaFerrari to the cause of raising money to help rebuild the parts of Central Italy affected by a series of earthquakes.

The disappearing stick shift: Less than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
Visitors to the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show will see supercars, hoverboards, self-propelling luggage and all manner of new transportation options. But they’ll be hard pressed to find a clutch pedal or a stick shift. Available in nearly half of new models in the U.S. a decade ago, the manual transmission is going the way of the rumble seat, with stick availability falling to about a quarter this year.

Audi cars 'will talk to traffic lights', firm says
Audi is introducing technology that will allow its cars to communicate with traffic lights, the manufacturer has announced. It will tell drivers when lights are due to turn green and when they will not make it before a light turns red. The firm said it was meant to make driving less stressful, rather than as a safety aid, it was reported. It will require a significant investment to make it viable in the UK, one expert said.

Tesla's 'Autopilot' Will Err. Humans Will Overreact.
In 1986, for reasons that now seem absurd, the Audi 5000 became the victim of a national panic over “sudden acceleration incidents.” These were, allegedly, events in which the car shot forward even though the driver was not stepping on the gas, but was rather pressing on the brake as hard as possible. There had always been a certain number of these incidents reported to regulators. Regulators didn’t do much with them, because they assumed what you are probably assuming: The drivers were not, in fact, stepping on the brake, but were flooring the gas.

Electric car sets world acceleration record
An electric racing car built by Swiss student engineers has broken the world record for acceleration by battery-powered vehicles. The grimsel car took only 1.513 seconds to reach 100kph (62mph) - slashing about a quarter of a second off the previous record time. So far, no petrol-powered production car has managed to hit the same speed in a comparable time.

VW will reportedly pay you $5,000 to settle its emissions scandal
If you were burned by Volkswagen's emissions cheating and don't think that $1,000 in credits and gift cards will cut it, we have good news for you... maybe. Die Welt sources understand that VW has reached a settlement deal with US officials that will have it pay affected diesel car owners $5,000 each to make up for misleading the public on the eco-friendliness of its vehicles. The company’s Vision Tokyo concept car, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, is aimed at drivers who love their digital toys. A circular leather couch that seats up to five...

The Lincoln Navigator Concept is a massive, luxurious land yacht
The new Lincoln Navigator Concept is a massive beast of an SUV. That's not surprising, given that the current Lincoln Navigator is also a massive beast of an SUV. But this concept, which is meant to give us a good idea of what the next-generation Navigator will look like, is also meant to carry that weight in a much more elegant way. "It was a very interesting challenge for the design team," said Lincoln president Kumar Galhotra in a meeting with The Verge ahead of...

All hail the new Bugatti Chiron
We will dramatically raise the bar in terms of top speed, we will dramatically increase the power… We didn’t need a hybrid. This, ladies and gentleman, is one of them because the Veyron’s reign as the world fastest production car is at an end, and the usurper comes from within.
