The things in the papers and news sites are just cosmetic.
The United States is still the best country in which to start a career and family. Since 2008 the economy has maintained steady modest growth (which I would argue is the best and most sustainable kind), and while not all industries are experiencing it equally, there are plenty jobs/careers to be had. People have religious and personal freedom, and there are myriad communities and climates in which to choose from. Tolerance is codified. This nation is a democracy, where politicians scramble to react to the zeitgeist, not the other way around. It is very possible here to move within the classes; if you have the talent, work ethic, and credentials you can become wealthy.
The US is extremely varied in personal temperament, and its incredibly easy to relocate within the national borders - you are guaranteed to fit in if you look hard enough and find the right town/city. Day to day life is not really affected by the newspapers, but the communities. If you hate the bible belt, try the pacific northwest, or any other unique region. We have an incredible range of higher education that you can eventually send children off to. Many well-to-do foreign families send their children here to gain a college education, and the subsequent job placement.

And if you don't buy that, the easy and unequivocal answer is that America has the best national, state, and local parks - bar none.
