I was in the military 21 years ago in the middle of winter. We dug trenches in the snow, kept guard, waiting for an attack from one of the other platoons. Suddenly, in the middle of night we got hit by a snowstorm, we tried digging out the trenches but they just snowed back in, then we concentrated on keeping the tents snow free which was difficult enough in itself. At last we heard that one of the other platoons had been hit by an avalanche and several was stuck under the snow. The best skiers went over to help but one person unfortunately died. After that we were evacuated from that damn mountain. Never been so afraid for so long before or later.
