The pollution and its effects are only going to get worse, despite the small efforts many do make, until there's going to be a major climatic event in a first world country that will kill a non-negligible proportion of the population. Then humanity, all of it, will wake up, but it will be too little too late for most. We'll see increasing weather related catastrophes until the human population drops to between 20 % and 40 % of its peak (maybe around 50 % of today's global population). If we're lucky, the children and grand-children of these survivors will have learnt the lesson. But there will be much better wealth distribution between these survivors because the balance of power will fall back towards the workers instead of the big corporate and political leaders, just like it happened, on a lesser scale, following the black plague events in the middle ages.
