One of my brother' friend's father is a home based computer repair guy and he just has a tonne of computers outside his house. He gave me one to fiddle with, without worrying about messing something up.

I use freecycle and freegle quite a bit. They're networks on which people give away stuff they no longer want, rather than taking it to landfill. I basically decorated my entire house from it: bed, shelves, TV unit, a piece or worktop I used to make a desk... some speakers... house plants... and so on. I also managed to source a free sofa bed, recliner chair, TV, and another set of speakers from friends and friends of friends. It's amazing what people have kicking about ready to be thrown away. I've done pretty well off free stuff!

With freecycle / freegle you have to give as well as receive of course. It's good though, there's a nice little community there.

I once got a really big bag of candy for free off of Craigslist. It was a little after Easter and the shops weren't selling their candy so the workers made an offer on Craigslist to come pick it up. Had to drive over an hour with my SO but we were so happy and so full when we finally got it. Best evening ever..

You're braver than I am to accept edibles from strangers.

I won a NES through a packet of cereal when I was 7. I lost my shit entirely as my parents had banned games consoles in the house. I had hit 20 lotteries that day, I would have never been allowed one if I hadn't won it. And now I've started developing my own games - a bit of a sliding doors thing there.

You won a NES?! All I ever won was a Monster Munch watch.

To be fair, I can't emulate a monster munch watch on modern technology. You had the longer-term value there.

I couldn't find a pic of it online and, alas, I no longer have it. :/

Have this though, you know, for nostalgia and stuff.

I remember that ad when it was on TV, and I always overthought the prongs of 'hair' that all pop up at once. Just seemed like that was all they were there for. Almost like the whole thing wasn't real or something.

I won a small camera from Samsung (the SH100). I believe it was their first iteration of a WiFi camera.

Boring as it is, when my SO and I moved into our first house together, a bunch of people gave us furniture to help fill it. Some of it was really nice and it saved us a huge amount of money at an otherwise costly time.

My friend gave me her old treadmill last week cause they don't have room in their apartment. I was stoked and she's an angel, but also, when someone randomly gifts you a treadmill, you have to kind of start wondering about your lifestyle hahaha.

Probably the eye tracker I got for free this spring. I haven't used it too much recently, but it's great for using in navigation in windows, and playing assassin's creed rogue with it was a ton of fun. It was like $200 and the owner of the company just gave me one for talking with him about it.

A middle of the line pentium 4 computer and monitor. Some start-up company was going to make a mint (they thought) by giving away computers that they were going to sell ads on. You had to provide your own internet connection and remain online for at least 8 hours a week. The ad console took up about a third of the screen and cycled through different ads. After 24 months, the computer was yours to keep.

They went out of business after about 3 months, because they clearly didn't think things through. 8 hours a week was pretty easy, log on before you went to bed, sign off when you woke up, one day a week. Ads viewed = 0. They sent certified letters requesting the hardware back, but since they didn't have the money to pay for shipping, if you wanted to keep it, that was cool too. Wiped it, put a clean install of XP on it and a decent graphic card in it, and gamed for several years.

Um... my in-laws have given us 2 cars.. a buddy gave me my 240sx w/ japanese SR-20 DET for replacing the transmission in it. I won a Samsung Level BT speaker and a pair of Beats Solo HDs from my old job.....

Basically, I'd never buy a lottery ticket, b/c I have bad luck when I actually enter drawings, etc, BUT I've gotten a lot of cool crap for free through the years!

Stories. Mainly when I was working with a bunch of 65-95 year old war veterans at a military museum when I was 16. They told me the craziest stories i've ever heard, and would not trade those stories for a million dollars. Many of them never had any children, so I might be the only person who will know of the crazy things those guys did when they pass on.
