After talking to some people it seems this is normal. I'm using Corel Painter and it has a feature of brushes interacting with the texture of the canvas, however the canvas texture doesn't scale when you use a larger canvas. So I end up with very fine texture instead of something that was original rougher. I'm going to have to do some research on creating larger canvas textures. Thank you for answering my question.
