Facebook accidentally launches, then pulls Snapchat competitor Slingshot
After recently killing off Poke, its first Snapchat competitor, Facebook is back with a second shot at ephemeral messaging. The new app, called Slingshot, lets you quickly send photos and videos to friends inside a minimal messaging interface. Like Snapchat, you can also caption and draw on photos and video messages. And of course, photos and videos disappear once you've viewed them.

The Complete Guide to Anonymous Apps
There was a time in internet history, not too long ago, when it looked like realness might prevail. Facebook pioneered the concept of single-identity networking — the idea that your online activity should be traceable to your real name — and legions of other companies jumped onboard. Real-world accountability would force us all to behave more responsibly online, they argued. The days of hiding behind pseudonymous usernames seemed numbered.

People Invested $1 Million In An App That Just Says ‘Yo’
It only took 8 hours to build the app, and the only thing it does is allow you to send the word ‘Yo’ to your friends. To many, it seems like a joke. But its inventor, Or Arbel, is totally serious. Arbel, who built the app three months ago, has quit his job and moved halfway around the world — from his native Israel to San Francisco — to work on Yo full time. He’s opening an office, hiring staff and seeking “strategic partners.” And oh yeah: He’s already raised $1 million from investors.

Is Facebook Slingshot Third Time’s A Charm Or Strike Three?
Facebook has today launched strike three against Camp Snapchat with Slingshot. As with many of Facebook’s recent products (like Paper), Slingshot is an already-proven idea dressed up in an expensive UI with an established distribution network of billions. Despite the fact that most social apps fail, it should be a home run.

Yo: why the silliest app in tech makes the NSA look ridiculous
Have you used Yo yet? I'm getting pretty into it. It's a silly little app that literally just sends the word "Yo" to a friend's phone. If you have audio alerts turned on, a hyperactive little man also yells Yo at you, which is adorable and terrible all at once.

Tinder Is Full of Robot Prostitutes
I moved back to New York from Cairo in January of 2014, and among the biggest culture shocks was American Tinder. In Cairo, there was the occasional woman, mostly Russian tourists on holiday, using the mobile dating app; in New York, I met a torrent of instant flirtation. Patterns emerged: apparently almost every woman under 30 in this city "Loves whiskey," is really into Hallmark-caliber affirmation quotes, and fake moustaches.

Why Apple should pay more attention to indie developers in the App Store
Over the past week or so, the Apple community has been abuzz with a series of blog posts on the realities of trying to make a living on the App Store. “Indie developers”—those who derive most of their income from selling software as a one-person shop—are nothing new. Many of the most venerable Mac and iOS apps around, from RSS reader NetNewsWire to popular read-it-later app Instapaper, have been developed and launched by independent entrepreneurs working on their own time and dime.
