NSFW Dog’s ears, nose cut off in Detroit; $2,500 reward
The Michigan Humane Society is offering a $2,500 reward for tips leading to the person or persons responsible for maiming a dog found with his ears and nose cut off on Detroit’s southwest side this week. A citizen spotted the severely wounded brown-and-tan Rottweiler mix near Livernois and Warren on Tuesday and alerted the humane society, officials said in a statement. A rescue team found the dog and rushed him to the group’s Mackey Center for Animal Care in Detroit, where veterinarian staff tended to him.

USDA removes online database that included animal abuse; activists cry foul
The United States Department of Agriculture shut down an online database Friday that included information about animals mistreated, injured and killed. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) cited privacy concerns in removing the documents, but one animal welfare activist said he believes the department is caving to pressure from groups that didn't like the information being so easily accessible.

Utah cat beating, torture prompts $40K reward offer for info
A reward offered in the search for suspects in the gruesome beating and torture of a pet cat in Utah now stands at more than $40,000. The Humane Society of Utah says an anonymous donor contributed $10,000. The 6-year-old cat named Sage belonged to a family from Clearfield, north of Salt Lake City. Sage went missing March 5, was found Wednesday and died Thursday.

Good news for animal lovers: Congress bans cutting off dog tails
The controversial practice will now be outlawed in Spain, along with cropping ears, cutting vocal chords, and removing claws and teeth. The Spanish Congress on Thursday passed the law, which will put Spain in line with the 1987 European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative People’s Party (PP) had voted against the legislation, while the liberal Ciudadanos and Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) abstained, according to El Pais.

Philadelphia Officer Arrested Over Dog Found in Trash Bag
A Philadelphia police officer is accused of putting his adopted pit bull mix in a trash bag and dumping it at a park last fall. Pennsylvania's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says Officer Michael Long, an 11-year veteran of the force, was arrested Thursday on animal cruelty and related misdemeanor charges.

Vet on trial after staff report him for mistreatment of his own dogs
A former employee of an Edmonton veterinarian who reported her boss to police for mistreatment of two dogs at his clinic testified Tuesday that she saw him punch one of the animals. Dr. Jun Yang is on trial over allegations that two dogs he kept at the clinic — a black Labrador retriever named Heza and a brindle Staffordshire terrier named Tiggor — were underweight after being kept in a small kennel for long hours without proper amounts of food and water.

California authorities seize over 7000 birds in largest cockfighting bust in US history
An illegal cockfighting bust on Monday in unincorporated Val Verde was the largest ever in the U.S., authorities said. “Any type of animal blood sport activity is a serious crime and will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Award-winning matador dies after being gored in bullfight
A famous Spanish matador has died after being gored by a bull in the ring. Ivan Fandiño tripped on his cape during a routine at the Corrida des Fetes in southwestern Aire-sur-l’Adour in France. After he fell, the Baltasar Iban bull – bred especially for such fights – rushed in and impaled his chest with its horn. The animal also suffered wounds in the ring.

Outrage ignites after Painesville officer allegedly kicks dying dog
The Painesville Police Department is facing heavy scrutiny on social media after an officer was accused of mistreating a dying pit bull this week. Somebody who claims they witnessed the incident posted the allegations on the police department’s Facebook page. “I’m so lost for words for what happened yesterday,” they wrote. “A beautiful pit bull got hit in front of my work yesterday.”

Spanish province to ban bullfighting, defying Madrid's conservative government
A Spanish province is bringing in laws aimed at eliminating bullfighting by the back door despite opposition from the country’s government and constitutional court in Madrid, which has ruled that the practice is a protected part of “common cultural heritage”. The Balearic Islands, which include popular holiday destinations such as Majorca, Minorca, and Ibiza, tried to ban the bloodsport in 2016 but was stopped in its tracks after Spain’s constitutional court ruled that local provinces do not have the power to stop the practice.
