Stress hormones in breast milk may help prepare us for a turbulent world
Experiments on rats dating back to the 1980s show beneficial effects of stress on offspring. When researchers spiked nursing mothers’ water with corticosterone (the rat equivalent of human cortisol) to mimick mild stress, their pups learned faster, had better memories, and were less anxious and more exploratory during stress tests. This suggested a better ability to cope.
