Not a one-way street: new study suggests that antibiotic resistance genes can spread from humans to livestock
When bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, it becomes difficult or impossible to treat infections in both people and animals. There is particular concern that the overuse of antibiotics in livestock & the food production industry is contributing to this issue. This new study suggests that, not only can antibiotic resistance genes be transferred from livestock to humans, but they can also be transferred the other way, highlighting the complex nature of the food network that we are a part of.
