A space-style oxygen helmet works much better than a face mask for reducing deaths in patients with respiratory distress syndrome
Among patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, a new study shows that treatment with oxygen delivered through a space-style helmet significantly reduces the number of individuals who subsequently needed to be invasively intubated. Not only that, but the use of the helmet vs. the face mask reduced the number of patients who died after 90 days. This small-scale approach now needs to be tested in larger numbers of patients, but results look extremely promising. Image:University of Chicago
