Because that's what Jesus would do: Jesus would ignore the poor and hungry to build a huge monument to religious fanaticism.
A Glimpse Into Christian Logic
Pastor: "We should spend $1 million to build a giant cross to get the word out about Christ."
Follower: "Don't you think there're better ways to use that money?"
Pastor: "Like what?"
Follower: "Like feeding and clothing the homeless."
Pastor: "Are you kidding? Do you have any idea how many homeless people there are in this country? Or even just here in Texas? $1 million is nothing compared to what you'd need to solve that."
Follower: "But--"
Pastor: "And besides, didn't Jesus himself live a life of poverty? Didn't he preach about the spiritual dangers of seeking material wealth, and how hard it would be for a 'rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven'?"
Follower: "Yes, but---"
Pastor: "I mean, these homeless people should learn to be more like Jesus."
Follower: "Well, maybe if we built a giant cross..."
Creepy. Those things are used to torture people to death. What a weird item to idolize.
