A private spaceflight company just got approval to land a spacecraft on the moon
Moon Express just gained federal approval to land a spacecraft on the moon, a first for a private space company.

This may be a silly question, but what authority does the US federal government have to grant or deny permits to land on the moon?
That was my question. Talk about ego, fuck.
Some of it has to do with multi-lateral government agreements. You need to register your drone with the FAA...I guess it kind of makes sense you have to register your intercontinental missle with them. It's quite an amazing thing to be on the verge of actually "staking out a claim" on the moon......remember those sites selling land on the moon?!!....get in cheap now....and then you can lease the mineral rights!
