What are personal core values?
Identifying your personal core values is critical What value does identifying your personal core values offer? Let me start by asking a different question — do any of the below thoughts sound familiar to you? I just can’t make myself feel motivated to save for retirement. How do prioritize my hobbies, time with my family, and my career? They’re all important to me. I’m overcommitted with too many social and volunteering obligations. But I don’t know what I can say “no” to because ...

Can I retire at 55 with $300,000?
I talk a lot about the feasibility of semi-retirement, so let’s get into some specific examples. Let’s say your goal is to retire at 55 — still much younger than the average American retirement rate. Early Career Job Change — Learn How to Pull It Off
Navigate an early career job change with this step-by-step guide. The idea behind both semi-retirement and FIRE is to save diligently in the beginning of your career so that you can have more freedom later. This is what I call Step 1 in the Semi-Retire Plan. As a result, it can feel like you have to “grind” at your unpleasant job with no reprieve. Well-meaning family members or mentors might tell you that an early career job change can push you off track for the remaining portion of your wor...

Marie Kondo, Endowment Effect, and Sunk Costs
The recent popularity of a hit Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, has been a sobering reminder for me: I’m not good at cleaning out! I know that I have no practical use for my college fraternity shirts, for example, but they’re hard to let go of. Maybe I’ll be in dire need of a t-shirt blanket sometime in the future? I’m inclined to keep them, “just in case.”

The Neurological Power Behind the Debt Snowball — and How It Can Change Your Life
Have you heard us personal finance bloggers mention a guy named Dave Ramsey? If so, your mental image is probably of a bald man cutting up credit cards and shouting about a snowball system, baby steps, and the Financial Peace University program. While we would all agree that it’s preferable to not be in debt, the specifics are controversial, including the debt snowball payoff method.

A Dollar Saved Isn’t the Same as a Dollar Earned
Getting your savings rate to your goal, or increasing it even further, can feel daunting. If you are just getting by on your take home pay now, there’s no way you could afford to save more… right? Well, if you’re saving through paycheck withholding into a pre-tax/tax deductible account (like a traditional IRA, 403b, 457, and most 401(k) plans), the extra savings might not hit your budget as hard as you would expect.
