I was there during El Caracazo, the coups, the rise of Chavez to power. What's going on now is an order of magnitude more intense than what happened then. It will be a miracle if Venezuela doesn't blow up into a massive carnage within the next few months/years. Cubans endured this crap much longer because they never knew what it was like to live in a modern society. Chavez started his experiment 4 decades too late, and it is not going to end well. I'm very sad for my family who are still stuck there.
