It seems like a pretty big leap to a breach of ethics, don't you think? The of replication of active brains (and potentially consciousness) for the sake of testing would be unethical in the extreme, but that's hardly what this experiment has done or aims to do.

This is certainly not an attempt to create consciousness, something we have trouble defining anyway.
I think they created a part, an organic part. How that is used or refined or directed is bumping into the ethics concept.
And ethics are malleable, dictated by the needs and/or acceptance of a society.
I am constantly in awe of seeing what I read about as a kid "labeled" science fiction is now becoming science fact.
