David Vine's new book argues that the hundreds of U.S. bases in other countries come at a high cost, both at home and abroad. He suggests reducing such bases and increasing diplomatic engagement.

I think that in the type of wars we've been fighting from Vietnam to present regular troops and bases have little value except in the rigid, tradition locked military mind. Most of our resources should be directed to intelligence and special warfare troops. We invade countries and break things, kill people and then can't understand why the locals are so angry at being "liberated." Then we pull out and the crazy guys come in to mess we left and get great support from the battered population who have learned real quick to hate America.
