Trading Halted on NYSE - Wall Street Journal Online
The New York Stock Exchange said it has temporarily suspended trading in all stocks, without providing further information. The update was issued at 11:32 a.m. New York time.

Coincidence? United Airlines have grounded planes nationwide due to a computer issue as well... link
I'm inclined to believe the NYSE and United issues are coincidences, but the Chinese stocks getting frozen and NYSE having issues the next day I'm far more skeptical of.
I agree. The Times says that the United issue was network router. Time says that the NYSE issue, on the other hand, was a "faulty system upgrade."
I dunno how a single router failure could bring down United's entire planet-wide reservation system. But I totally buy the story about a failed system upgrade. This happens all the time: insufficient testing under realistic load conditions, leading to a botched roll-out.
ALL the time.
The NASDAQ is still up, and NYSE is saying this is a technical issue, unrelated to the turbulent markets today.
I'll still be putting on my tinfoil hat and burying gold in my yard after work...
