I'm inclined to believe the NYSE and United issues are coincidences, but the Chinese stocks getting frozen and NYSE having issues the next day I'm far more skeptical of.
I agree. The Times says that the United issue was network router. Time says that the NYSE issue, on the other hand, was a "faulty system upgrade."
I dunno how a single router failure could bring down United's entire planet-wide reservation system. But I totally buy the story about a failed system upgrade. This happens all the time: insufficient testing under realistic load conditions, leading to a botched roll-out.
