Agreed! I remember when gifs where mainly just for cheesy stars and rotating worlds in GeoCities pages, now we have these subtle, carefully crafted little pieces of art, it's crazy.
I don't mind them as long as they are smooth and have a point to them. Sometimes a 5 second gif is much better than a video to get a point across, especially when sound is not needed.

GIFs are also simple and thus universal on all devices.
Yep, lots of gifs can get annoying fast, especially on mobile, but a nice, fast-loading one that gets the point across vs. a video? bring the gifs!
