Some of these areas have 15+ million people. Given the wealth the US has compared to most other countries, of course the major metro areas will have a bigger economy than most countries.
Makes you wonder what Detroit's economy is like nowadays... I watched one of those documentaries about Detroit last night, damn it was sad to watch. The whole city is just decaying.
That's what happens when the industry the entire city was built on collapses and moves elsewhere.
