Read somewhere once of people traveling with pricy photographic equipment (those lenses are expensive) that you purchase a flare gun or starter pistol and put it in your bag. The TSA requires it to be in a hard shell case with a non-TSA lock on it. They will march you over, scan it, let you lock it, and track it special to make damn sure it makes it to it's destination at the end of the flight
