I suspect Firefox's memory management scheme clashes with garbage collection. It feels, at least, like it stalls as the square of the session complexity.
This jives with my experience. I used FF on my PC for about 5 years until 2 years ago, when I just couldn't justify the trouble compared to Chrome. Chrome is a ram hog, but it just works. Similar story with FF for Android.
