What is Lattice cryptography?

Interesting, but I believe any historical talk about lattices, at least in the context of computer science, necessarily has to start with a mention of the Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz algorithm (LLL algorithm) from the 1982 paper "Factoring polynomials with rational coefficients". It was an algorithmic breakthrough, gave a efficient approximate solution to lattice problems. It had an exponential approximation factor, but very good in practice. The killer app was cryptanalysis.
