At the risk of alienating any potential dinner guests, I would say that the interesting question isn't "Is the 5-second rule true or false?" The interesting question is "Are the germs that are picked up going to sicken/kill us?" There is a lot of research that suggests that the rise in allergies is correlated to the rise in sanitary standards.
