The US government has been turning a blind eye to literal highway robbery of their own citizens - committed daily by bandits in uniform that call themselves "law enforcement". It should surprise no one that they would do this to someone that is not a US citizen if there is a financial benefit to the US government or at the behest of one of their corporate benefactors.
As long as legal bribery aka lobbying is allowed and the politicians are bought and paid for by corporations, you will continue to see this kind of crap.
