No surprise here and the top employers in each state says a lot about the economy in the U.S.

It says a lot about how the stats are gathered and what counts as a single company. In the case of my city, there are several hospitals and health networks. If you count them separately, each one might employ 20k. Put the whole network together, and one of them can easily top 100k. In the case of for example Wyoming, it's very possible that comparatively few people work for Walmart, but since every store that is owned by Walmart is Walmart, while most of the rest are working either for small companies or on farms, it looks like everyone is in retail. Missouri is one of those types of states, outside of Columbia, St. Louis and Kansas City, most people are in agriculture, but small farms aren't part of a big network, so it doesn't make the list.
