A few years ago, I had the opportunity to view the sunrise from a hot air balloon in Cappadocia. Passengers from all over the world arrived at the launch site before dawn for a light breakfast. Once our guides shepherded us outside, you could see the balloons slowly expanding and lifting into the sky, glowing as they filled up with air. The ride itself was incredible - the ground fell away effortlessly, while the balloon's flame kept the morning chill at bay. The air was clean and calm and you could see for miles on all sides. Other balloons; our shadow; the unique landscape; buildings in nearby small towns. Some townsfolk even waved up to us as we floated overhead. Eventually the sun climbed into view, illuminating our balloons and the landscape below. Many passengers, including myself, were taking photographs throughout the ride. It was a beautiful and truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. The ground grew closer as we drifted back to earth, and although the landing seemed a little tricky, it wasn't too rough. Seeing somewhere from the sky, especially from an air balloon, can give you a new appreciation for the place. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone who is interested.
