I thought they usually go around anything that violent.
They do, if they know it's there. Sometimes that relatively normal looking cloud has all sorts of nasty things in it. I was on a plane climbing out of Detroit in the mid 90s that had this happen. Fun ride.
Glad I was not on this flight. I don't know the procedure for planes flying into storms so I can't comment on the why of this.
Usually, they try to go around or over. It isn't always possible due to size of the front.
I agree that would be an extremely scary flight. I know they usually try to avoid them but maybe this one "popped up" or maybe it strengthened before they got to it.
