What ever happened to just lighting them on the ground? I don't understand all these fireworks maimings, injuries, and deaths.
Alcohol is often a factor.
There must be a magical intersection of points on a graph where you're drunk enough to want to fire a mortar off your chest, sober enough to successfully balance, light, and launch the firework, and stupid enough to believe it's a good idea.
