This is what happens when you try to manage a president that just simply can't be managed. He's completely unhinged.

Trump is going after Mueller and Dowd didn't want any part of it.
I think it's very unlikely Trump has any intention of firing Mueller.
He's talking about doing it to harden the position of the people that support the "Collusion" investigation, and keep the media arm of the DNC crying wolf.
From a legal standpoint, Dowd probably told him to knock it off, and when it was obvious he wasn't going to, well when your client won't follow your advice, you're not doing anything but soaking up billing hours.
