With Microsoft's decision to end development of its own Web rendering engine and switch to Chromium, control over the Web has functionally been ceded to Google. That's a worrying turn of events, given the company's past behavior.

Nobody handed over anything they just dominated and people picked them and naturally they became the largest because you don't need 100 different search engines just one that's ok.
That’s like saying that you don’t need 100 tv stations, just one. Or 100 different newspapers.
True but TV stations focus on different forms of entertainment and newspapers focus on news across the entire world. A search engine much more simple which is why Google came out on top. How many search engines do you need?
A search engine has control over what you get to read. This is a much greater, albeit subtler, power. I’d much rather have lots of search engines, and I actually use more than one precisely for that reason.
But that's not how people think. As a group they'll make a decision based on what is the easiest, fastest and most convenient. Unfortunately Google would have to do something horrible enough that it morally repulses people. Short of that, it's easy to use, fast and everywhere. Gmail and YouTube are used by enormous amounts of people straight through the company and it won't change anytime soon.
