Europe has already imposed a two-year restriction on the use of three common neonicotinoids on flowering crops (clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiametoxam). This restricion is based on a European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) scientific report that warns for "high acute risk" on bee populations. However, Nature states that Future legislation should take into account the potential cascading effects of neonicotinoids on ecosystems. Hallman et al. (2014) found a bird decline of 3.5% annualy on locations that contain high imicacloprid concentrations. They claim a causal relationship between the neonicotinoid and bird bird decline.
