I don't know why anyone would be surprised that a debt doesn't magically disappear when you get old. You borrow money; you are expected to pay it back. Do people really take out student loans and then think "if I just wait long enough this debt will mysteriously go away"? Hey, maybe I can rack up five figures on my credit cards and then just wait until I'm gray and say "oh, you still want me to pay that back?"

I wonder if they just forgot about it as this would have been in the 50s or 60s or maybe it changed so many hands they lost track. Who knows. The big thing I took from this article is that this is the only debt they can pull directly from Social Security.
