Past presidents have painted our country as the vanguard of science and progress—even though anti-science sentiments have often simmered below the surface of the public discourse. In the early 20th century, technology started developing faster than laypeople could comprehend: We could now hear disembodied voices on the phone or radio, mobilize armies with jeeps and tanks, and kill people with invisible chemicals. While developments like electric light and disease-eliminating medicine were celebrated, the feeling the world was changing too fast created a suspicion of science and scientists that continues to this day.
