A new book examines traces the rise of the economic system -- and why it's too entrenched to resist.
It's all been tried and failed.
Would you agree that capitalism is a working model?
For now it is. In 100 more years who knows.
Capitalism is the only "working" model.

"must either underpay (this is somewhat subjective) their laborers, or neglect to fully replenish the natural resources......"Underpay is totally subjective, not "somewhat". Failure to replenish natural resources is true in any/all systems/models. Globalization is exactly what has exacerbated the "increasing income gap". The development of new technologies is enhanced by capitalism. None of the problems you cite are unique to capitalism. Seems your's and other's solution (s) lie in some nebulous system of the future.
