This is what glassdoor.com is for. You can post your earnings and see what others in similar roles are making. I check it out before each job change
I don't really talk about it, but I work for the state government. Anybody with an internet connection can look up my current base salary and (maybe a year or two behind) my actual pay, including overtime, per diem, and benefits. I don't know if every state has this feature.
