Unfortunately, there is a problem with trying to make Christians keep their beliefs to themselves and not try to convert others because it is an integral part of the doctrine to do just that. Atheists (and most other belief/non-belief systems) don't require their followers to convert others, and yet in many ways the proclamations they make - such as the original post here - seem to be attempting to do it as well. Maybe not outright conversion but there is definitely a tone of "hear what I have to say and accept it and respect it." Personally, I have learned the hard way - after many years of preaching and teaching and leading in a Christian institution - that I will not ever again try to make others believe what I do, nor will I allow them to attempt to do the same to me. Believe what you want and act upon it however you choose, as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others to do the same - that's how I choose to live. Of course, that allows you to choose something else entirely.

I always find it interesting (and annoying) that people of any belief system - even a system of "non-belief" - feel it necessary to make sure that their voice is heard and understood and deemed important. All of the points in this post are valid - and not anything new - but they take the same stance that they are attempting to fight against: here is what I believe and you should listen to it and respect it. But don't try to force your beliefs on me? WTF?

I figured I'll post this because I saw whats been happening in regards to Neil deGrasse Tyson's twitter remarks which sparked a wave of criticism. Although I have my own beliefs which I feel strongly about I'm not about to go on a crusade to convert as many people as I can to my way of thinking... Not only is that rude but also the wrong way to approach these matters if you expect any significant change, no matter how important it may be. People have their individual beliefs and if threatened will defend against them (and their honor), so trying to mock someone into changing their beliefs is futile. The only way people can change their way of thinking is if they figure it out for themselves, and here in lies the challenge.
