Email service developed a side business after it was acquired by Slice in 2014 – selling aggregated data about users to apps they were unsubscribing from.

Huh. I have to admit, this surprised me. I'm ok with monetization but a part of this feels a little like a betrayal. Selling my data to the very companies I try to avoid? I just plain don't like it.
You might also like to know how the system works, it basically just redirects the newsletters it's supposed to unsubscribe from if you cancel the ability to unroll.me to control your inbox they all start coming back in. Basically, the whole thing was a filter, I assume so they can do just this, harvest your information for their partners.
