I think the atmosphere of the first installment didn't carry over to the second and third. I felt more of the LOTR vibe (which I thought were great film adaptations) in the first movie, a good example being the scene when the dwarves are singing in Bag End. It really captured the mood of Tolkien's universe.

The second and third movies on the other hand... it's all been mentioned before. Too much legolas, random dwarf-elf romance, bad action scenes that don't add any value to the plot and are drawn out. Also, compare the dwarves in the hobbit with the dwarves in LOTR; many of them look like miniature pretty boy elves in comparison. They weren't stout at all.
