1984 by George Orwell (free in text format)
Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public mind control, dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (or, in the government's invented language, Newspeak, called Ingsoc) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite.

Has the copyright expired on it or something? Regardless, it's a great read that everyone should experience.

I read this in college in a class called "The Leader and the Led". It remains the best college class I have ever taken, it really made you think. The instructor was a German ex-patriot who survived a childhood during the Nazi regime. Unfortunately, he would have been labelled a "liberal" by our jaded journalists, even though we read books that shed an equally bad light on communism as part of the class.
That sounds like quite a class. I read it years ago just cause I like sf.
