The fire looks really good, and the grass isn't nearly as bad as you think. I would work on the posture though, it's really static and doesn't evoke the movements involved in spitting fire out of ones mouth. The lighting is a bit off too, maybe some light from the fireball and brighten up the dark side as well. The Pokéball looks really good as well, though I would scale it down just a tad. Composition is OK, but don't forget about the rule of thirds!
Ye I'm terrible at lighting because I haven't got round to reading/watching anything about it. It's one of the less exciting subjects for me but i know it's important.
I remember I did this one mainly to try out some compositing tricks in Blender, learnt a lot and hopefully will get better.
Keep it up, the more you practice and learn, the better you will be! It's great to have people contributing original content to the site as well, it's very much appreciated.
