    the theory behind this is that the people who once lived on these islands used up all the natural resources on the island, including all the wood from trees. This in turn meant that there was no stability or structure to the earth, as roots play a key part in keeping things where they are, a bit like an anchor. Once all the trees where gone, the loose ground was swept down hill covering up the statues right up to their head.
