Researchers can test tooth fragments by using an oxygen isotope analysis of tooth enamel. This makes information available of where an individual lived when the tooth formed. Oxygen occurs naturally in the environment and is absorbed by plants and animals. It is fixed in the mineral part of mammalian teeth and its isotopic configuration is related to the environment in which the person spent his or her childhood.
