    Wait, I thought Uber was just an app that connects riders to drivers. Thus, the drivers were mere "independent contractors" and not employees. Why would the maker of an app buy actual cars?

      So that they don't have to bother with sharing a cut with actual drivers, or deal with the unpredictability of people.

      But maybe they'll reconsider if they have to pay for the maintenance of all those cars.

      Now it's like renting a self driving car.
