The music has kept getting worse. The difference is that in 1997 there was no autotune, so crappy singers were more obviously crappy.

So, in a way, they at least sound less crappy? Because since Cher used it, probably more for having something exclusive, I saw it more going mainstream, like any other sound or instrument. It will not have the same impact as the electric guitar or the synthesizer and I will rejoice that moment when prefrontal cortexes start to realise there is such a thing as well written and or composed music, name a not too sub-cultural artist, no matter what style of music and you'll find really good stuff. Produced nowadays by youngsters who laugh their asses off, hearing autotune. Not about the sound, but about us. And how they found an ingenious way to rebel.

Edit: One man's trash is another man's treasure.

The difference between autotune and an instrument like a guitar is that autotune, by design, enables people with no talent to sound like they sort of know how to sing. If you don't know how to play a guitar and pick one up, no matter how electric or fancy it is, it will be obvious that you don't know what you're doing.

Autotune has enabled more mediocre "artists" to reach mainstream popularity than anything else I can think of.
