This is exactly what I remember. I use lots of google products and was excited about google+ when I first read about it but they seemed to want to try to create a buzz of people clamoring to gain access and doled out sign ups by invite only initially. When they finally got around to letting people use the service I and everyone else I knew was already frustrated and had moved on. They had a real shot and blew it.

surprised to hear that the chip technology may actually be implemented in the US when all the data suggests it hasn't prevented fraudulent use as originally touted in europe and elsewhere. it certainly has reduced in-person fraud but resulted in equivalent or greater increases in online and remote transaction fraud where there is no physical presence of the cardholder. with the huge expense of new equipment and cards, the chip and pin or chip and signature system appeared to be dead on arrival in favor of jumping right into virtual wallet alternatives.
as this article indicates, despite being newer than the magnetic strip technology, the chip systems are also already outdated and are unlikely to result in much, if any, positive changes on the fraud and identity theft fronts.
