TIL In Japan gambling is illegal, the way they get around the law is to give out prizes instead of cash, which the winner can then sell back for cash.
Pachinko (パチンコ?) is a mechanical game originating in Japan and is used as both a form of recreational arcade game and much more frequently as a gambling device, filling a Japanese gambling niche comparable to that of the slot machine in Western gaming.

I have a buddy who actually has a working pachinko machine. It's basically all mechanical, but it works like a slot machine but it uses little metal balls and if you win it pays you in more medal balls on the spot.
That's a strangely large loophole. Why not just allow gambling?
