Besides Facebook's misguided attempt to prevent fake names, "avatar" is a generic word that shouldn't be associated with any copyrighted work just because it got popular.
My biggest concern about this article is Facebook is now asking for legal identification.
Reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit with Nicolas Cage, he played a character who was complaining about people making fun of his last name. He pronounced it Azz-weep-a but of course it was spelled Asswipe.
