I found that annoying given how particular the creators of Dr Who were with continuity in the tardis and it's operation back in the Black and White serial days :( Makes me sad that standard hasn't been kept up and they just like.. mash buttons like some sort of heathen.
I suspect Capaldi said that just to annoy Wheaton, not because he has no idea how to do it. As a matter of fact, I suspect Capaldi has very complex principles on how to pilot the TARDIS... First, it helps you as an actor, and second, I'm less of a superfan than Capaldi is and it's what I'd do.

no no, i would expect someone of Capaldi's calibre and impishness to make a more cheeky reply of why he can't tell him rather than "i can't tell you"

I dunno, his delivery was pretty awesome... Like it was never a question at all. But I understand what you mean!
Definitely got a vibe of cheekyness and mystery there. :P
